State St at Winchester St, 1979

This photo was taken in 1979. I want to say this is the southeastern corner of the intersection of State and Winchester streets in Murray (if so, the Fashion Place Mall would be across the street). In other words, we’re looking north on State St at 6400 South. There’s nowhere else one would turn right to access that one direction of I-215, so I’d say this is a pretty safe bet. This intersection sure has changed since then – no Dee’s Restaurant, and certainly no 29? hamburgers.

And, not to forget the roadgeek connection in this photo, there’s an I-215 state-name shield, one of four or five that I have seen a photo of (a month ago, I hadn’t seen one single photo). I postulate that Utah began using neutered shields in the early or mid 1980s; by 2000, 95 percent of state-name shields were gone, and by the late 2000s, none remained.

This photo is from one of 145 boxes I’ve been perusing at the State Archives. Unfortunately, after the first twenty boxes the photos are all weird, undeveloped negatives, like this one. I had to go in and invert the colors in this photo, and it turned out better than I expected.
